There are many reasons that make it’s the best engineering institutes in India and academic excellence is one of them. The other reason of the popularity of the IITs are their notable alumni that currently enjoy top technical positions. Starting with the man at the very top, here is a look at the career path of Google CEO Sunday Pichai – easily one of the most famous alumni of IIT Kharagpur.

Many know about the humble beginnings of Google’s top man. The stories of his journey from the two bedroom apartment to his current salary package (which was recorded at $199 million last year) is a tale many are well versed about. But what is it that he did to get there? Apart from shear technical genius and spectacular leadership abilities, he also followed a specific academic path. We take a look at that.

Sunder Pichai, as per his own admission, was not an extremely brilliant student but a bright student. On his trip to his alma mater IIT Kharagpur last year, the modest executive remembers how he too struggled through his engineering days at IIT KGP. What is perhaps most interesting to note is that the man who leads the IT giant does not have an engineering degree in computer science or Information Technology. A graduate from the institute’s metallurgical department, Sundar Pichai has worked hard to achieve his success.

After completing his B. Tech from IIT Kharagpur and then went on to do his Master’s (MS in Material Science and Engineering) from Stanford University. Sundar Pichai then did his MBA from Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. To his academic accolodes he has the title of topper of his batch of IIT Kharagpur as well as a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar – conferred to him by Stanford and Wharton, respectively.

Speaking about the man, his thesis guide Indranil Manna told HT, “If you ask me today whether I had known then that he would be the Google CEO one day, I will say a leader for sure, a thinking man... He was bright, had a star in his eyes.” Sheer hard work has had a strong role to play. He joined Google in 2004 and gradually, by hard work and brilliance, created his place at the very top.
